Lattice Communications Employees to Bowl for Multiple Sclerosis

FAIRFAX, IA­- November 30, 2012 Employees of Lattice Communications and their families will take part in a bowling fundraiser on Sunday, Dec. 2 to benefit the National Multiple Sclerosis Society (NMSS).

The event will be held at May City Bowl on the Southwest side of Cedar Rapids.  Lattice Communications is the primary sponsor and expects to have over 60 people at the event.  Proceeds from the fundraiser will benefit NMSS. Participants will also have the option of making free will donations and bidding on silent auction items at the bowling alley.

The fundraiser benefits a cause that is close to the heart of Lattice Communications owner Bruce Leventhal, “My mom had MS so it’s personally important that I can in a small way, make a difference with helping the people and families affected by this illness receive emotional and mental support, medications and medical follow-up, food, shelter, transportation, and daycare. So many things we take for granted are a daily struggle can be minimized with our contributions,” Leventhal explained.

Each week, more than 200 are diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis. A diagnosis is often accompanied by fear, an uncertain future and a list of painful, frustrating physical and cognitive ailments, such as blindness, poor bladder control, loss of concentration and verbal fluency.

Leventhal praised the efforts of Elizabeth Trcka, who was instrumental in organizing the bowling fundraiser. “I want to thank Elizabeth Trcka and her family for their incredible years of effort and contributions with originating the Bowling for MS Event.  This is an excellent community charity that I hope the MS Society incorporates nationally.”

Trcka, who owns May City Bowl with her husband, Tom, began the fundraiser 11 years ago. “My sister was diagnosed with MS 17 years ago, so we wanted to help in some way. A fundraiser was a way we could help raise awareness and money.”

She added that she knew that Leventhal’s mother had the disease and approached him two years ago to become a sponsor for the event.

“We hope to raise $10,000 this year with the bowling and silent auction event,” she said. There are auction items for people of all interests, and Trcka said some of the highlights include a PGA cap signed by Zach Johnson, YMCA memberships, a year of car washes and many other items.

Do you ever wonder if fire suppression systems were created because of the great Chicago fire in 1871? If Mrs. O’Leary’s barn had been equipped with a suppression system, perhaps Chicago’s history would have changed. Or maybe someone else’s cow would have kicked over the kerosene lamp in their barn instead and Chicago would have had the same fate. We will never know the answer to that but we can’t help but wonder, what if?

What is a fire suppression system you might ask and how does it work? Fire suppression is using a system to deploy a water-based or dry chemical agent to help diminish the fire and prevent it from spreading. Automatic fire sprinklers were the first form of fire containment created in the late 1800’s. Depending on your business and equipment, water based systems may not be right for you. Electrical components could easily be damaged by the water and cause more business downtime. In cases like that, dry chemicals or gaseous fire suppression systems are a better alternative.

Dry chemical systems coat equipment with a chemical powder designed to stop the fire. Vehicles of all types will require a chemical suppressant system because of the flammable fuels and oils used in them. These systems can be applied to a single item or to an entire room if needed. Full room application is useful in instances where hazardous and flammable liquids are stored and fire spread would be dire. 

Another alternative is a gaseous form of fire suppression, also known as a clean agent suppression system. This method does not coat equipment with a chemical nor does it damage it by water. It is designed to eliminate certain factors that cause a fire, such as oxygen or carbon dioxide. Because these systems eliminate oxygen from the air, they are not recommended for use in an occupied business.

Lattice holds ribbon-cutting ceremony at headquarters in Fairfax

Lattice Communications, the U.S.’s largest stocking dealer of telecommunications shelters, cabinets, generators and towers including new rectifiers, fire suppression, H.V.A.C. and construction services, held a ribbon-cutting ceremony at the company headquarters in Fairfax, Iowa on Wednesday, August 15.

The ceremony, which was conducted by the Cedar Rapids Economic Alliance, celebrated Lattice’s significant growth and expansion over the last year.

Lattice’s new headquarters expansion began production in spring 2011 and was completed that fall. It houses our expanding employee base including project management and inside sales.

On May 22, Lattice was awarded the recognition of Eastern Iowa’s Fifth Fastest Growing Company by the Corridor Business Journal. In the midst of the most challenging economic climates since the Great Depression, Lattice tripled revenue and doubled in work force in 2011.
